Dining Saloon

Hi all,

We are almost certain that this will be the last video offering of 2009 from the Sutherland Steam Railway. This video is our annual, traditional “Santa Special” video, documenting the trains of the same name running on the line.

Filmed=5/12/2009.

Todays timetable saw departures from Sutherland at:-
10:00, 11:30, 12:40, 13:50, 15:00, 16:20

Also, as it was Saturday, there was a 7:30pm departure from Sutherland by the “Sutherland Limited Dining Train” which, today, also consisted of our Devon Belle Observation Saloon. The saloon was providing the very popular on-train Bar and after-dinner seating area.

The locomotive roster was:-
*4-6-0 68XX No6862 “Derwent Grange” (Main Shift)
*0-6-0 Austerity No68075^^ (Main Shift)
*4-6-0 Black 5 No45156 “Ayrshire Yeomanry” (Afternoon+Evening Shift)

^^=5775 was meant to take the 2nd main shift but, due to last minute changes, 68075 took her place. This was because 5775 was being readied to go off on a 7-week Loan Visit to another railway where she is due to haul passenger services until the end of January. Meanwhile, 2 visitors have arrived at Sutherland and are filling 5775’s place in the sheds.

Selene 56 m aluminium ketch, represents the ultimate evolution of the successful 56m-series that have included sisterships SY Burrasca, SY Santa Maria and SY Rosehearty . Her design has been optimised by Perini Navi in consultation with Ron Holland Design to achieve high performance under sail. Perini Navi ’s Interior Design Department realized a modern interpretation of Art Déco style. The style is reflect ed in the wide and rich variety of precious and refined materials. Woods such as ebony, frisé maple, wengè, Myrthus and Bavona briar-roots are integrated with stainless steel, leather, parchment and white Afion marble.

On the main deck , a lateral corridor, located to port side, allows the crew transit from the aft cockpit to the crew quarters through the pantry and the wheel house without interfering with the privacy of the guests. The grand saloon, bar and dining are separated by sliding doors. This gives the feeling of being in an open space, but with the privacy of separated areas. The flying bridge offers a spa pool, sun mattresses , and casual dining . Below, shaded by the bridge overhang, the aft guest cockpit offers comfortable al fresco dining and lounging together with a plasma television and entertainment system .

Selene features a very elegant innovation in her transom, which hydraulically opens and reveals a structural stair case ending with a wide swimming platform for guests comfortable access to the sea. She also has a swimming platform located on the port side created from the door of her spacious lazarette.

Accommodations
Accomodation for 12 guests in 5 cabins, include a full-beam master suite with sitting room, walk in wardrobe, his and her bath and shower room. There are two large double cabins with bathrooms and two twin bedded cabins each with a shower room and an additional pullman.

[Kempas Baru, Johor - Singapore]

24 June 2009, 1011h, Tanjung Pagar KTM Station, Singapore.

As part of the 30th Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad – State Railway of Thailand Joint Conference (30th KTMB-SRT Joint Conference) organised by KTMB, this train carried some delegates of both railway companies from Johor Bahru (Kempas Baru) to Singapore. However, the SRT coaches were not attached on this train, and instead parked at Kempas Baru instead. This train would travel back to Kempas Baru later the same afternoon.

When this train was approaching, the driver played the headlight and the horn to greet me. Much thanks for their kind greetings.
